What should I consider when choosing a transformer?
Question 1: What’s your transformer input voltage and output voltage requirements?
As a transformer’s purpose is to adjust the input supply voltage to the appropriate voltage required by the appliance/equipment, it is extremely important to note the appropriate input voltage and output voltage of your transformer
Determining the input voltage requirement:
Check the voltage that’s supplied to your household/factory from the utility company. For Philippine households, this would typically be ~220 – 230V. However, when in doubt, you can check directly with your utility company or measure the voltage yourself using a Voltmeter
Determining the output voltage requirement:
The output voltage needs to match the voltage requirement of your appliance/equipment. To find out, check the nameplate label on your equipment or the equipment manual. If you have difficulty finding it, feel free to reach out directly to the equipment supplier
Question 2: How many phases are required by your transformer?
Depending on the nature of the power supply, you may need either a single phase or a three phase transformer. Most houses and small factories would only require single phase transformers, as low-power applications like residential lighting and air conditioning units are manufactured to operate on a single-phase AC supply. On the other hand, heavy duty factories and industries typically require three-phase transformers for their heavy equipment, which require higher voltages.
Again, the exact requirements of your equipment should be indicated in the name plate and the manual. Don’t guess. Make sure you’ve determined the exact requirements as a single phase transformer would not operate with a three phase equipment, and vice versa
Question 3: What wattage rating is required for your transformer?
To determine the appropriate wattage rating for the transformer, you must first determine your equipment’s expected power consumption then calculate the maximum load required. The maximum load required is typically ~25% to 300% higher than the power consumption rating indicated in your equipment’s nameplate or manual. Question 4: What frequency is required for the transformer?
Equipment purchased but used in different countries may require a transformer to alter not just the voltage but also the frequency of the voltage supply.
