If you’re having trouble charging your batteries, don’t panic! There are a number of common issues that can arise when charging batteries, and many of them can be solved with some simple troubleshooting. Here’s a guide to some of the most common battery charging problems, and how to diagnose and solve them

The battery won’t charge at all

  • If your battery won’t charge at all, the first thing to check is the power source. Make sure that the charger is plugged in and receiving power, and that the outlet or power source is working properly.

  • You should also check the battery itself, as a dead battery or one that has been discharged for a long period of time may not respond to charging.
  • Check the fuse if it is good or already busted. In case of busted fuse, replace the fuse with the same size and same rating. Typical causes of busted fuse are:
  1. Battery clips were shorted.
  2. Battery clips connected to battery terminals (+) and (-) were reversed.
  3. Battery to be charged is already damaged, shorted, or not in good condition.

The battery charges very slowly

If your battery is charging very slowly, this could be due to a number of factors.

First, check the charger to make sure it is compatible with the battery you are trying to charge. If the charger’s ampere rating is too low, expect that it will take a long time to charge. A quick way to check this is to look at the following:

  1. Ampere Hours (to charge) for your battery
  2. Ampere output rating of the Panther Battery Charger

To make it easy for you, you can use our handy Panther Battery Charger chart below to determine the charging time needed given your battery type and which Panther Battery Charger you purchase given varying charger ratings

Second, you should check the battery clips and make sure that it is not damaged or frayed, as this can slow down charging speeds.

Lastly, make sure that the battery terminals are clean and free of debris, as dirty battery terminals can interfere with charging.

The battery gets hot while charging

Note that battery heating up is normal while it is being charged. However, it is when the heat is abnormally hot that you should start checking if it is a sign of overcharging or a malfunctioning charger. Check the charger to make sure that it is not outputting too much power, and make sure that you are using the correct charger for the battery. For example, if your battery is rated 12V DC, make sure to use a battery charger with an equivalent output voltage. If the battery continues to get hot, you may need to change the battery charger being used, as overheating can damage the battery.

The battery loses its charge quickly

If your battery seems to lose its charge very quickly after being charged, this could be due to a number of factors.

First, check the charger to make sure that it is charging the battery to its full capacity. If the charger is not charging the battery fully, it may not be able to hold a charge for very long.

Next, you should also check the battery itself, as an old or worn-out battery may not hold a charge as well as a new one.

The charger makes a buzzing or humming noise

If your charger is making a buzzing or humming noise, this could be a sign of a loose or damaged internal component. Stop using the charger immediately and have it inspected by Panther’s qualified technician, as continued use could result in a fire or other hazard.
